Mineral element content in sediments from lakes in central Mexico

ABSTRACT
The present study summarizes the mean content of: Se, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni, Mn, Cr, Fe, Co, Al and Hg in sample sediments collected in water reservoirs in central Mexico. These samples were classified according to the waste they receive: Silva damp (55 samples of industrial waste); Sn. Fco. del Rincon in the state of Guanajuato, Cuautitlan Izcalli (5 samples of industrial waste) in the state of Mexico; Chapultepec (15 samples of urban waste) Huayamilpas (10 samples of urban waste) in Mexico City and El Zarco lake (5 samples of rural waste)in the State of Mexico. Analyses for heavy metal content was performed following the atomic absorption spectrometry. Age in years of these lakes was estimated according to the time they first received waste water and it was as follows: Chapultepec (l50), Silva damp (70), Cuautitlan (50), Huayamilpas (30) and El Zarco (30). Findings in this study indicate that Se (0.305 ppm) and Al(42577 ppm) contents are the highest at El Zarco, even that it was considered as the control reservoir, but Chapultepec presented the highest amount of Pb (439 ppm), Cd (4 ppm), Ni (150 ppm), Mn (466 ppm), Co (24 ppm) and Hg (0.40 ppm), as well as the Silva damp with Cr (318 ppm) and Cu (61 ppm), when compared to other reservoirs included in this study. These lakes seem to be indicators of heavy metal pollution, and are a source of metals for underground water contamination too.REFERENCES
