ABSTRACT

This article describes the natural cycle of Claviceps purpurea in sorghum and other grains. It also describes the first finding of the Claviceps spp alkaloid, which is an ergonovine derivative identified the by thin layer chromatography under the long wave ultraviolet light, but unreactive to the van Urk reagent in sorghum from the state of Morelos, Mexico. The macroscopic characterization of Esclerotia, the honey-like fluid produced by Claviceps spp during the infection of the sorghum ovary as well as the clinical signs of animals suffering of Claviceps alkaloids toxicity are described. The number of esclerotias needed to induce toxicity in animals is also mentioned.
