Evaluation of antibiotics used in a NICU of a general hospital

ABSTRACT

Objective. To know the frequency and the clinical justification for the use of antibiotics in neonates of the NICU.
Material and methods. The clinical files of 65 neonates with septicemia admitted in the unit in a period of six months were revised.
Results. The study included 65 patients. The antibiotic most commonly used were amikacin and ampicillin, the justifications for its use were: invasive maneuvers, premature rupture of membranes and sepsis in 26% cases. The Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis were most frequently reported in blood. There was no cultures of Gram negative bacterias.
Conclusions. Antibiotic used in the NICU are those recommended in the literature but the clinical justification for be used must be reviewed.
