ABSTRACT

A preparation containing beta-galactosidases from Aspergillus species was used in 10 severe malnourished children with lactase deficiency. All cases were studied by the lactose loading test, the thin-layer chromatography and the demonstration of reducing substances in the stool. Twenty four hours after, once the deficiency was identified, it was given the same quantity of lactose used in the loading test, but it was added with the preparation containing beta-galactosidases. There was a significant difference of glucose in blood 90 minutes after the loading of lactose; when it was added with enzimes, the level of glucose was higher. These findings indicate that lactose is hydrolyzed and absorbed better when the preparation containing beta-galactosidases is added simultaneously.
