ABSTRACT

Michou & Mau Foundation: a 10 year experience in the transportation of the burned patient. Burns are a public health problem in Mexico, especially in children. For the last 10 years the Michou & Mau Foundation has given support for the transportation of burned children to the United States when they can’t be treated in specialized places in Mexico. The aim of this study is to review this experience and determine the mortality of these patients. We did a retrospective analysis of the information contained in the transported patients’ database. We included gender, age, burned body surface area (BSA), depth of the burn, etiology, month and year of the transportation as independent variables and mortality as dependent variable. The information was analyzed using Excel® and SPSS® software. We found a general mortality of 8.17%. 65.56% were males and the average age 7.3 years (CI 95% 0-17.9), the average burned BSA was 55.71% (IC 95% 18.29-93.13%). We found a statistical relation between burned BSA and the mortality (RR 0.69 IC 95% 0.59-0.80 for survival). This mortality is less that found in specialized centers in Mexico.
