Sexual abuse, violence, massive communication media.

ABSTRACT

Violence against children is on the rise in Mexico, as well as in other countries; sexual abuse accounts for a substantial number of cases. In view of the difficulties inherent to a diagnosis of certainty in this form of child abuse, a multidisciplinary work team is required. Massive communication means have been thoroughly studied in other countries because of their relationship with these events.
Two clinical cases recently seen at the Clínica de Atención Integral del Niño Maltratado (Clinic for Integral Care of Abused Children) of the Instituto Nacional de Pediatría showed a clear interrelation between those factors, which may be analyzed separately. The medical community should be sensitized to the role of pediatricians in the diagnosis, prevention and management of violence against young the children.
