ABSTRACT
Introduction. Among the most important causes of neonatal death are: respiratory distress, prematurity and congenital malformations but it is important to know the causes in the place where we work in public health.Objective. To analyze the neonatal mortality in Othon Pompeyo Blanco’s Quintana Roo, in order to know the causes.
Material and methods. An exaustive revision of death certificates from urban and rural areas was done. From these document were colected; the place and circunstances about prenatal attention and the circunstances of the death around the birth.
Results. There were 148 deaths, 112 in 1995 and 36 in 1996; 62.9% in public institutions, 27.4% in institutions of social security, 7.3% in private clinics and 2.4% were at home; in 47.4% there were complications at the childbirth in 60% which received prenatal attention; at labor 83.9% received medical attention; 16% were attended by nurses; 0.9% traditional by midwife and 13.6% by no medical personal. The three principal causes of perinatal death, were: asphyxiation in the mother’s womb; interruption of circulating of matemal-foetal’s blood; and placenta’s insufficiency.
Conclusion. The rates of perinatal’s deaths were: 10.2 by 1,000; the main frequency happened among 37-42 weeks pregnancies; 65% presented low weight. Is necessary to receive and appropriate prenatal control, intensive care of the childbirth, and capacitation in neonatal attention.
