Frequency of low birth weight in infants born in Coatzacoalcos-Minatitlán

ABSTRACT
Objective. To know the frequency of low birth weight (LBW) in two general hospitals.
Material and methods. The number of children with birth weight below of 2,500 g born in two hospitals of the Mexican Institute of Social Security IMSS were collected from the hospital files from January of 2005 to September of 2006 in Minatitlán and Coatzacoalcos in the State of Veracruz.
Results. In Minatitlán in 2005 there was 1,514 newborns and the prevalence of LBW was 4.5% and in 2006 born 1,153 with a prevalence of 5.4%. In the Coatzacoalcos Hospital there was 2,158 newborn children in 2005 with a prevalence rate of 3.9% and in 2006 born 1,704 with a prevalence of 3.9%.
Conclusions. The low birth weight in children born in the general hospitals of IMSS in the Southeast region of Mexico is around 5%.
