ABSTRACT
Objective. To known the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital.
Material and methods. It is a prospective study of 29 neonates with less of 34 weeks of gestational age (WGA) and below 1,500 g of body weight (BW), which were attended in the NICU in 30 months. In all of them the imagine of retina was studied by eye-fundus exploration.
Results. 52 neonates attended in the NICU during the study and 29 had › 34 WGE and ‹ 1,500 g BW, 7 (24.1%) of these had ROP: 3 of them with grade III and one of degree V. Six were treated with mechanical ventilation for 12 ± 7 days and one was handled in phase I of ventilatory support for 10 days.
Conclusions. Emphasize is done in the ophthalmological study of the eye-fundus in neonates with very low body weight.
