ABSTRACT

A high number of neonates suffer respiratory distress. This pathology is the principal cause of the admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
The aim of our study was determine the oxygen index in neonates admitted in our Hospital, from May 1, 1997 to April 31, 1998. The study design was cross-sectional. We studied 25 neonates with diagnosis of Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (MAS), and Patency of the Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). We calculated PAO2, Da-vO2, Fick and Kirby Index, DA-aO2 and Qs/Qt to each patient.
In Respiratory Distress Syndrome were anormal DA-aO2, Kirby and Fick Index, Da-vO2, Qs/Qt. In PDA were anormal DA-aO2, Kirby and Fick Index, Qs/Qt. Finally, in MAS we observed sligthy altered DA-aO2, Kirby and Fick Index, Da-vO2, Qs/Qt.
We concluded the Oxygen Index are mainly altered in Respiratory Distress Syndrome, and in second tern Meconium Aspiration Syndrome and Patency of the Ductus Arteriosus.
