ABSTRACT

Objective. To stablish normal ranges in quadriceps and subcutaneous cellular tissue thickness measured by ultrasound in healthy euthrophic, Mexican lactating babies younger than one year.
Material and methods. It is a prospective, transversal, exploratory and clinical study. Measures in the quadriceps muscle and in the subcutaneous celular tissue (SCT) by real ultrasound time in healthy, euthrophic lactating babies younger than one year.
Measure was in the medial point of the right thigh. Relationship between both tissues was also calculated.
Results. There were 16 children, 8 males and 8 females. Average grossure of the muscle was 1.50 cm males and 1.26 in females. Average grossure of the SCT was 0.79 in males and 0.72 in females. Average index between muscle and SCT was 2 in males and 1.81 in females. There was no significant difference between both sexes.
There was a positive correlation between age and muscle grossure for both sexes (to older age, grosser muscle); there was also the same correlation between age and muscle/SCT ratio (p = 0.03). Age and SCT have a negative correlation (to older age, mineur grossure).
Conclusions. Measures of the different tissues vary according to age. To older age, grosser the muscle and greater relationship muscle/SCT. Normal relationship M/SCT for Mexican lactating babies was 1.9 and showed a statistical significance when other variables were crossed.
