ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of our study was to determined frequency of congenital hypothyroidism in newborns by means of neonatal screening, in a regional hospital.Material and methods: We made neonatal screening to 7,755 newborn infants between 48 hours and 30 days of age. lf the patients were positive to screening then we analyzed T3, T4, thyrotrophin and thyroideal centellogram tests.
Results: The average age was 5 days. There was not found significative difference by sex in the group. The test was positive in four babies but only two had altered all thyroideal tests.
Conclusion: The neonatal screening is too easy to make, it is not expensive and very sensitive in detection of congenital hypothyroidism. We concluded that it must be obligatory in all newborn infants to avoid irreversible consequences.
