ABSTRACT
Objective. To determine that circumcised newborns with superficial anesthesia presents more reaction to the pain, in comparison to newborns with penile dorsal nerve block (PDNB).
Material and methods. The sample was divided in two groups: ten (group 1), were circumcised with PDNB and II (group 2) with local anesthesia. In all cases were used a plastic bell. And it was registered the cardiac and respiratory rates, the mean arterial tension, the oxygen saturation and the rectal temperature. Before and after the procedure, blood glucose and plasma cortisol concentration were measured.
Result. No differences were found in mean arterial tension, oxygen saturation and temperature. Comparing the levels of cortisol before and after circumcision in both group, we didn´t observe significative differences and a similar behavior was observed with blood glucose. The same results of the laboratory were compared in both groups, before and after circumcision, and there was a significative difference in both: cortisol and blood glucose.
Conclusions. In this study no significative difference was appreciated between the PDNB and superficial anesthesia, however, they are potentially useful anesthetic procedures, that can help to maintain the physiological stability in the circumcised neonate. It requires increase the sample studied in order to define better this observations.
