ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases have been related with lifestyle characteristic of urban communities where the lack of physical activity, the emotional tension and consumption of saturated fats are common. We ignore the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in rural populations of our country, where we suppose this type of problems is not frequent. Objective: To determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in rurals populations of the state of Guanajuato and Michoacan. Material and methods: This is an observational, comparative, prospective, cohorts study in a sample of the populations of The Concepcion, Guanajuato and Santa Ana Maya, Michoacan. We registered: age, sex, antecedents of premature cardiovascular disease, smoking, arterial pressure, body mass index, waist perimeter, fasting glycaemia and lipid profile. Results: The prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia, prehypertension, hypertension, overweight, smoking, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome in studied rurals populations, are superior to the national stocking reported by the national surveys. Conclusions: The high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in the state of Guanajuato and Michoacan leads to consider the elements that have influenced in this epidemic metamorphosis to be able to prevent and to treat the metabolic and cardiovascular illnesses associated to this factors of risk.
