ABSTRACT

Background: To describe the clinical variables and treatment results of patients with esthesioneuroblastoma at otolaryngology and head and neck surgery service of Hospital Central Militar, Mexico.
Material and methods: The study was done with the data of patients diagnosed from January 2000 to January 2006, at otolaryngology and head and neck surgery service of Hospital Central Militar, Mexico. Data obtained were: name, register, sex, age, image studies, histopathological diagnosis, tumor classification, surgical procedure, complementary treatment and complications.
Results: Five patients were included: 60% with Kadish C classification (T3 of Dulguerov) and 40% Kadish B (T1 of Dulguerov). Treatment was exclusively surgical in 40% of patients and surgical plus radiotherapy in 60%. Eighty percent of patients did not have recurrences and 20% (1) had metastasis in the neck.
Conclusions: The most proper treatment of this study was: cranio-facial resection by combined approach (open plus endoscopic). In advanced stages radiotherapy was added; however, this article presents few cases to establish statistically significant conclusions.
