ABSTRACT

Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular tumor of the childhood. It appears before the 2 years of age and 95% of it is diagnosed before the age of 5 years. The prognosis is directly related with age at the time of diagnosis. In early stages the survival rate reaches 85 to 98%.
Objective: To evaluate the experience in the management of the patients with retinoblastoma in the Clinic of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus of the General Hospital of Mexico.
Materials and methods: Retrospective review among the years 1998 and 2004. Characteristic and treatment for each case, defining the evolution under the parameters of alive without tumor activity, alive with tumor activity or died by tumor activity.
Results: 42 patients with age average of 2 year-old at diagnosis. Unilateral retinoblastoma in 66.6%. The most frequent sign was leukocoria. One case with familiar history. Enucleation was made in 36 patients, being curative in 22 patients. All bilateral cases required systemic and local therapy. One patient died because of tumor activity.
Conclusions: Enucleation continues being the used treatment, with high curative rate in unilateral cases. Alternative therapies allow us to preserve the globe and their function, especially in bilateral cases.
