ABSTRACT

Objectives: Find a difference between stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients referred and not referred. Observe the association between DR and the ophthalmologic chief complaint.
Material and methods: Analytic retrospective study. Random selection and probability sampling. We reviewed 30% of the diabetic patients files, which came in for first time at Instituto de la Vision during the year 2005. SPSS was used: Descriptive statistic, ANOVA no parametric, Chi-square.
Results: 68% of patients were not referred. 83% of non-referred patients seek medical attention without symptoms. 100% of patients with diabetic retinopathy did not have associated ophthalmologic diagnosis. Therefore it was evident, that the hypothesis had to be rejected.
Conclusions: Most of the diabetic patients come to the office without a reference of their primary care physician and therefore have advanced stages of disease. The detection and timely treatment of diabetic retinopathy is a «protector factor» against blindness in diabetic patients. The absence of timely ophthalmologist consultation increases the risk of irreversible blindness.
