ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and security of the hydrogel intraocular lens and determine the incidence of posterior capsular opacification and capsular phimosis.
Methods: Prospective cohort study were inclusion criteria were patients over the age of 21 years, both male and female who had undergone cataract surgery with phacoemulsification technique with a hydrogel intraocular lens. Visual acuity, keratometry readings, intraocular pressure and anterior segment were assessed.
Results: 1,280 eyes were studied from October 2001 to January 2006; 60% were female patients and 40% were male; average age was 62.3 years; the average intraocular lens power was +23.3 diopters; preoperatory visual acuity was from light perception to 20/60, and visual acuity range six months after surgery was from 20/60 to 20/20, however, it dropped after one and two years after surgery secondary to capsular phimosis and posterior capsular opacification in 20 to 25% of the patients.
Conclusion: The hidrogel intraocular lens showed a high incidence of posterior capsular opacification and capsular phimosis in high-risk patients.
