ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate the absorption of pre-retinal hemorrhages after pars plana vitrectomy in eyes with severe proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).
Methods: Twenty-one eyes with severe PDR and tractional retinal detachment that developed preretinal hemorrhages after vitrectomy using silicon oil as tamponade underwent a 6 weeks follow-up. All eyes went through a clinical ophthalmologic examination and photographs each week.
Results: There was a statically significant absorption of hemorrhages at 6 weeks of follow-up (p‹ 0.0001). There was not a significant statically difference between the photographs readers (p›0.05). The Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.98 to 0.99 in both readings: first day postoperatively and at 6 weeks of follow-up. No silicon retro proliferation was observed in any of the twenty-one eyes.
Conclusions: A significant absorption of preretinal hemorrhages was observed in all eyes that underwent pars plana vitrectomy with silicon oil at 6 weeks of follow-up. These results suggest that an immediate removal of preretinal hemorrhage may not be mandatory.
