ABSTRACT

Purpose: To determine if the Ocular Trauma Score (OTS) is useful for visual prognosis in patients with open globe injury.
Material and methods: To apply the OTS to patients with open globe injury from March 2005 to March 2006 and to evaluate the visual capacity six months after the injury.
Results: 36 patients have been included, 34 male and 4 female, the penetrating globe injury has been the most frequent (23).The patients in OTS category 1, 80% had No light perception (NPL); category 2, 66% with NLP; category 3, 42% with light perception to hand motion; category 4, 66% visual acuity 20/200 to 20/50, and category 5 66% better than 20/40.
Conclusion: The OTS is a method that helps us predict the visual outcome in patients with open globe injury in the Hospital de La Luz .There is a direct relation between OTS category and visual outcome. It is necessary to continue with the study to know the prognosis in our hospital
