ABSTRACT

Introduction: Retinoblastoma is the most common malignant ocular tumor in childhood. In Guatemala the real frequency and the presentation characteristics are ignored.
Material and methods: A retrospective and descriptive study was carried out. From 1996 to 2006 a total of 113 patients with retinoblastoma diagnosis were studied at the Hospital de Ojos y Oídos Dr. Rodolfo Robles V., located in the capital of Guatemala.
Results: 60 cases were male and 53 female (M:F ratio1.13:1). The age range at diagnosis was 1-96 months ( Median 29.31). Unilateral presentation in 68.1% and bilateral in 31.9% cases. Median age at diagnose in unilateral cases 34.1 months and in bilateral cases 19.25 months. 93.8% of cases without family history of retinoblastoma. 100% of cases with affection in both eyes had family history. The main presentation form was leucocoria in 59.3%.
Conclusion: The characteristics of retinoblastoma in Guatemala are similar to those observed in other developing countries. The necessity to create a national system for early retinoblastoma detection exists. This would support an early, standardized and multidisciplinary treatment for this patients.
