ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe ocular manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus in children and to examine the correlation with inflammatory systemic disease.
Material and methods: Observational, descriptive, transverse and prospective study. Clinical data regarding their systemic disease and disease activity were recorded and a full ophthalmic examination carried out from May to December 2006.
Results: 20 patients were recruited. Of these, 17 were females with a mean age of 155±57months and 3 were male with 123±101months. 16 (80%) patients had systemic activity and ocular manifestations: amaurosis fugax (1), blepharitis (2), dry eye (8), conjunctivitis (1), episcleritis (2), retinopathy – cotton-wool spots (2), maculopathy -not associated with cloroquine- (1) retinal pigment epithelium disorder –periphery- (2) and cataracts -associated with corticosteroid use- (3). Not statistical significance in the correlation with systemic activity and specific ocular manifestations.
Discussion and conclusion: Children with systemic lupus should be evaluated periodically by a pediatric ophthalmologist by virtue of that a high percentage of patients presents ocular pathology, independently that the lupus have or not activity.
