ABSTRACT
Objective: Postoperative pain as a result of root canal treatment is a very frequent collateral effect in the treatment of teeth with necrotic pulp without fistulae, it can last days or weeks due in part of an inflammatory reaction of the periapical region. It is controversial the calcium hydroxide in pain prevention in the exacerbated necrotic pulp.
Material and methods: A double blind study in 80 patients that required root canal treatment in non-vital and no fistulae teeth.
Results: It was observed that postoperative exacerbation was relatively small, calcium hydroxide as a pain preventive treatment; healing delay in necrotic pulp without fistulae does not avoid the postoperative symptoms. There are other factors to be considered, even controlled in the treatment can be the cause of pain between appointments.
