ABSTRACT

Chronic respiratory obstructive disease is characterized by the chronic limitation of pulmonary air volume clinically manifested by non reversible progressive respiratory difficulty due to emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It may be in association to bilateral papilledema as a result of the combination of hypoxemia and hipercapnia with elevated venous pressure and polycithemia. The systemic therapy is directed to improve ventilation but the visual prognosis is bad in general terms.
A case with chronic respiratory obstructive disease, high blood pressure and obesity with slow and progressive visual function to total blindness in both eyes is reported. The fundoscopic examination showed retinal hemorrhages, venous congestion and bilateral papilledema confirmed by retinal fluorangyography.
