Phthiriasis palpebrarum, Phthirius pubis, pediculosis, blepharoconjunctivitis.

ABSTRACT

Phthirius pubis is the most common cause of eyelash pediculosis. Lice infest the pubic hair, and can be found in the axilla, chest, eyebrows and eyelashes.
68-year-old female patient complains of two-month history of blepharoconjunctivitis. Biomicroscopy examination revealed crab-like arthropods and cigar-shape particles on the eyelashes. Microscopic examination demonstrated Phthirius pubis. The patient was instructed to scrub the eyelashes with 1% lindane shampoo and 2% pilocarpine. One week later clearing of the lice and viable nits was found; but some empty nits were still attached to the eyelashes. Mechanical removal of these eyelashes was performed.
Many treatment options are currently available including lindane, anticholinesterase eye ointments, yellow oxide mercury, 20% fluorescein, cryotherapy, argon laser and mechanical removal of the affected eyelashes
Association with other sexually transmitted diseases in adults and sexual abuse in children makes it mandatory for the ophthalmologist to further investigate on these entities.
