Malignant schwannoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To report a case of orbital malignant schwannoma, as an unusual tumour at this site. Some of its clinic pathological features are considered.
Material and methods: This is a case report of a 32-year-old female, with history of progressive left ocular proptosis, which suddenly became more apparent. Some image studies were performed (USG and CT). The orbital tumour was surgically removed.
Results: The histopathology findings report a malignant neoplasm of spindle shaped cells arranged in fascicles, with pleomorphism, nuclear atipia and few mitotic figures. This tumour was diagnosed as a malignant schwannoma.
Conclusions: Malignant schwannoma must be considered, clinically and histopathologically, as a differential diagnosis in the group of spindle cell sarcomas of the soft tissues in the orbit.
