ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate the refractive outcome and long-term complications in myopic patients with cataracts after phacoemulsification.
Methods: A retrospective and descriptive study was realized in 64 eyes of 41 myopic patients, which underwent phacoemulsification. The mean age was 62 years (range 30-86). They were followed up from January 2001 to July 2002.
Results: Postoperative visual acuity was 20/200 or better in 63 eyes with a spherical equivalent of 1.23D. Two eyes required Nd: YAG laser therapy after 2 years of the surgery (3.12%). One eye presented a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, which was later on reattached without further complications (1.6%). There were two cases of retinal detachment due to diabetic retinopathy.
Discussion: Phacoemulsification is a safe technique for treating cataracts in patients with high myopia. Vitreoretinal complications should be further evaluated.
