ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate visual outcome after phacoemulsification and IOL implantation in patients with retinitis pigmentosa.
Material and methods: Retrospective, longitudinal, observational and descriptive study of patients with retinitis pigmentosa and cataract in a six year period.
Results: Twenty-eight eyes of 21 patients were studied. Fourteen unilateral and 7 bilateral cataracts were found, all of them posterior subcapsular opacities. The average age was 43 years . Twelve right eyes and sixteen left eyes. 67.9% of the patients had visual acuity improvement and 32.1% stayed the same.
Conclusions: Early phacoemulsification surgery and IOL implantation in patients with retinitis pigmentosa and cataract is a good option for recovering central vision when macular function is intact.
