Dental caries experience and needs for treatment in adolescents

ABSTRACT

Objective. The purpose of this report was to study the dental experience of caries in adolescents and the needs for treatment.
Methods. The oral health status of 219 teenagers of 14 and 15 years of age was studied. Dental examination was performed using the index DMF-T and it was calculated the SiC index, in order to obtain information of the most affected individuals. The study was done by a researcher previously calibrated, following the WHO criteria.
Results. There were 157 (71.7%) adolescents with experience of caries. In the group of 14 years age, were 70.46% and in the group of 15 years age were 72.5%. The DMF-T was 2.96 ± 2.98, (D = 2.48 ± 2.85, M = 0.02 ± 0.134, F = 0.48 ± 1.28). The SiC was of 6.53 ± 2.51 and the treatment needs in 83.6%.
Conclusion. The prevalence of dental caries in level suggested by the WHO, but there was predominance of the decayed component. It suggest the need to implement policies for to attend the needs of this population.
