ABSTRACT

There are a few Studies of protozoa in children’s oral cavity. Some studies suggest probable pathogenicity. Objective: Find the prevalence of oral protozoa in Mexican children, its association with age, gender, oral hygiene and periodontal disease. Material and method: One hundred and fifty children 3 to 14 years old were studied. Oral protozoa were detected in oral rinse sediment by fresh observation and trichromic stain. Results: 8.7% were positive for Entamoeba gingivalis; 12.7% for Trichomonas tenax and 1.3% for both. The general prevalence was 22.7%. It was found an association with age and periodontal disease, but not with gender. Conclusion: The frequency of T. tenax is higher when compared with similar reports.
