ABSTRACT

Objective: To know the epidemiological characteristics of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) in Mexico and foster continuous education on the subject.
Design: Epidemiological, observational, prospective, and descriptive study.
Statistical analysis: Descriptive and inferential analysis, using parametric tests for interval and proportional variables, and non-parametric tests for ordinal and nominal variables.
Setting: Research Committee of the Mexican Association of General Surgery (AMCG, for its initials in Spanish).
Material and methods: A group was integrated under the name of GIST Project, which developed strategies for the detection of cases. Those interested, registered their GIST cases from 12 cities or counties, between July 2005 and July 2007, all cases were confirmed through immunohistochemistry.
Results: Forty-four cases were studied, 24 corresponded to women. Average age was of 57.6 years. Two patients were siblings. Two patients were found with double primary tumor. Two children, 8 and 9 years old, were studied. Seventy-five percent of the tumors were confined to the organ of origin; the most frequent location was gastric. Most manifested as a sensation of occupying mass or as an incidental finding. Large tumors were perforated, An average of two mitotic figures were found for the 3 to 5 cm tumors, and six mitotic figures for the larger than 5 cm tumors. In 79.5% of the cases, the diagnosis was established first by means of histopathological study, previous to the immunohistochemical marker. All tumors were confirmed positive to CD117.
Conclusion: The analyzed series determines clearly the biological and clinical behavior of GIST tumors in the Mexican population.
