ABSTRACT
Objective: To show the distribution and anatomical localization of colorectal cancer in the population cared for at a second level regional hospital during a 4-year period.
Setting: Second level health care hospital.
Design: Case series.
Statistical analysis: Percentages as summary measurement for qualitative variables.
Patients and methods: We performed a retrospective, observational, transversal, and descriptive study of patients with colorectal cancer, confirmed histopathologically, attending the Surgical Oncology and General Surgery Service of our institution, from January 2003 to December 2006. Analyzed variables were: age, gender, anatomical localization, symptoms, type of surgery, histological type, clinical staging.
Results: Sixty-five patients with colorectal cancer were treated. No differences existed in terms of gender distribution. The most frequent age at the time of diagnosis was between 61 and 70 years. The most frequent location was in the ascending colon and the rectum. Most frequent surgeries were right hemicolectomy and abdominoperineal resection.
Conclusions: Colorectal carcinoma, at our institution, has presented in a similar percentage in women and men. The most frequent location is in the ascending colon and the rectum.
