Incidence of benign and malignant tumors of major salivary glands in the Central Hospital of San Luis Potosí

ABSTRACT
Objective: It is presented an epidemiological research of the incidence of benign and malignant tumors of major salivary glands at Hospital Central de San Luis Potosí, from 1996 to 2006.
Materials and method: Data was obtained from the patient’s records and histopathology reports. Diagnosis was based with the WHO tumor classification of salivary glands
Results: The diagnosis was divided in two groups: epithelial and non-epithelial. Group I included 87%; benign tumors were more frequent (56%). 54% of the tumors were in females. For benign tumors the second decade was predominant and the sixth for malignant. The most common location was the parotid gland with 88% of the benign tumors and 65% of the malignant tumors. The pleomorphic adenoma was the more frequent (51%) followed by mucoepidermoid carcinoma (17%). 88% of the interventions had no postoperative complications; the most frequent lesion in malignant tumors was of the facial nerve (7%). Group II comprehended 13% of the cases, it was predominant the parotid gland (56) and more frequent hemangioma.
