ABSTRACT

Since the beginning of the infection by the Human Immune-deficiency Virus (HIV) epidemic the involvement of the oral cavity, periodontal tissues and cutaneous tissues has been observed. Severe forms of the disease have occurred in individuals with this infection, among them; Gingival Linear Erythema, Ulcerative Necrotizing Gingivitis (UNG), ulcerative necrotizing periodontitis (UNP), besides pathologies such as Candidiasis, hairy leukoplakia and Kaposi’s sarcoma among other; and seborrheic dermatitis, folliculitis, xerosis, and molluscum contagiosum as cutaneous diseases. There is a disposition towards chronic periodontitis among these patients and the UNP is an infection characterized by gingival necrosis, invasion of the papillae, bleeding and pain. The incidence of oral lesions has been correlated to the clinical features, demographic, immunological and viral parameters. Diverse periodontal and corporal lesions in a male 21 years old with the presumptive diagnosis of HIV/AIDS and UNG/UNP are reported in the present communication. This patient assisted at the Periodontia Graduate Clinic at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, Jalisco. In conclusion, periodontist´s must be able to recognize and manage the periodontal lesions associated with HIV infection particularly in the first stages of the HIV/AIDS. This leads to an improvement of the quality of life of these subjects.
