ABSTRACT
As a result of the increased participation of women in Mexican dentistry, the present study was intended to examine if this trend was held in the decade of the 90’s, and to identify gender differences in dental practice in Mexico City. Two hundred and seventy six questionnaires were delivered to dentist in their private dental office in three socio-economic strata (popular, medium and high). Data showed that the trend of participation of women dentists was incremented. Of all dentists, 23.3% were women in 1983; this percentage raised to 39.1% in 1992, reaching in the present study 44.2%. From all men, 28.8% were specialists, while from all women there were only 16.3%. From all men, 42.5% were owners of their dental office, and from all women there were 28.7%. The mean number of dental appointments per week were 17.5% (sd 1.7) for men and 17.2% (sd 0.9) for women. It is concluded that the advancement of women’s participation in Mexican dentistry has been held during this period.
