ABSTRACT

The congenital aetiology of trigger thumb in children is controversial and several theories have been proposed. A retrospective study with 48 patients and 63 "trigger thumbs" from january 1971 through December 1998 at Diaz Lombardo, Shriners and ABC Hospitals in Mexico City was done. In all patients a flexion contracture of the interphalangeal joint between 20 and 90° without "triggering" was found and surgical release of trigger thumb was performed in all cases. This condition is usually seen after birth. "Acquired thumb flexion contracture in children" is a more appropiate description for this disorder.
