ABSTRACT

History: The initial presentation of this kind of cardiopathies in the adulthood is not frequent. The mayor of these pathologies are simple lesions and of easy recognition, but sometimes there are complex lesions which are challenging for the diagnostic and treatment. The standard gold is the hemodynamic study, but the echocardiography study has been demonstrated a good percentage of specificity and sensibility. And it has the advantage that is not an invasive procedure, with less cost and more accessible. Objective: To know the frequency of congenital heart disease in the adulthood diagnosticated by transthoracic echocardiography in Hospital de Especialidades de CMN La Raza. Material and methods: The study was observational, descriptive and retrospective with the variables age, gender, congenital heart disease and associations, in a period of time from January 2004 to January 2006. Results: In the period of two year we review 9,833 studies, 1,071 studies had the diagnostic of congenital cardiopathy (10%). Of these total, 37% were male and 63% were female. The mean age was 34 years old, with a maximum age of 77 years old and a minimum of 18 years old. The most frequent congenital heart disease was the atrial septal defect with a 40%. Conclusions: The echocardiography is a diagnostic method, that offers the opportunity to do a complete study of many pathologies, with less cost, easier and faster than a hemodynamic study. In our Hospital the most frequent congenital heart disease is the same, as reported in the World literature which is atrial septal defect.
