ABSTRACT
Objectives: Determine the normal values in latency and amplitude of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in subjects without vestibular disease and compare them to value obtained from subjects with vestibular disease to determine the sensibility, specificity, positive and negative predictive value of this test. Methods: An analytical observational transverse comparative case-control study of 21 subjects without and 21 with vestibular disease. Latencies were measures for p 13 and n 23 and amplitude was measured from p 13 to n 23. Results: There was no statistical difference in latencies and amplitudes between the control group, case group and the normal value reported in the international literature. Sensibility of the p 13 was found to be of 0.47, specificity of 0.74, positive predictive value of 0.70 and negative predictive value of 0.56. The n 23 wave presented lesser sensibility of 0.21, but a better specificity of 0.95 and a positive and negative predictive value of 0.80 and 0.55 respectively. Conclusions: VEMP have a low over all sensibility for the p 13 wave at 47%, a specificity of 80%, positive predictive value of 70% and negative predictive value of 56%. Sensibility for the n 23 wave was 21%, specificity of 95% and positive and negative predictive value of 80 and 55% respectively.REFERENCES
