ABSTRACT

Objective: to assess marital satisfaction (MS) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and compare it with other chronic diseases and normal controls. Material and methods: we studied 50 patients with RA and compared them with 50 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 50 patients with diabetes mellitus (type 2), and 50 normal controls. We applied a marital satisfaction questionnaire (MSQ) and correlated it with disease severity indexes. Results: median score for MSQ was worst in women with RA as compared with all other groups (p = 0.028, Kruskal-Wallis). There was no relation with functional indexes except for AIMS (Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale) (p = 0.0079). Conclusions: patients with RA have worse MS than patients with other chronic diseases and normal controls.
