ABSTRACT

Objective: To know the type and ophthalmologic attention received by a population with diabetes previous to its entrance in an ophthalmologic center of reference.
Material and methods: Observational prospective study made by means of questionnaire to patients with diabetes mellitus type 2, between August 2007 and February 2008 in the Mexican Institute of Ophthalmology.
Results: 220 patients were included. Mean age was 58.5 years, being 51% in productive age, 46% have more than 10 years with diabetes, 32% resorted to the alternative medicine, leaving their allopathic treatment, 38% do not refer medical supervision of their metabolic control on the past three months and 62% never had consulted the ophthalmologist contrasting with 65% that received optometrist evaluation of their visual problems. Only 15% were referred to the ophthalmologist by doctors and 6% by optometrists.
Conclusion: Diabetic metabolic control by doctors is irregular. One third resorts to traditional medicine, two third parts looks for ophthalmologic attention in optical services. Few optometrists and doctors refer patients to the ophthalmologist.
