ABSTRACT

Mortality trends since 1998 and data for 2003 in insured population of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) is presented for different age groups and sex. A total of 98 128 deaths were reported, including 50 654 men (51 %) and 47 474 women (49 %). The majority of deaths were registered in elderly population. Main causes of death were diabetes mellitus, cancer, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and and included little incidence of infectious diseases. Within different age groups, certain causes of death merit particular attention. Injuries constitute a problem that affects all groups at different magnitudes, while AIDS and hepatic diseases associated with alcohol consumption in men and hepatitis in women emerge as important health problems. Mortality profile in elderly population is characterized by comorbidity and disability. The IMSS needs to intensify prevention and control programs to face the increasing demand for specialized and costly health care services.
