ABSTRACT
Objective. To study the clinical characteristics related to the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in children with metabolic syndrome.
Material and methods. Fifty two patients with high ALT and fatty liver were studied for metabolic syndrome. The criterion for the metabolic syndrome was: high concentration of ALT and AST and a ratio AST/ALT higher than 1. The diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was done by one ultrasound study.
Results. Fifty two patients were divided in two groups taking as a cut point 40 U/L of ALT. So 22 (42.3%) of the patients were up of this cut and 30 (57.3%) were below that. The elevation of insulin in blood, the resistance to insulin and the hypertriglycerides in blood does not show differences among groups. The alterations of glucose metabolism were statistically significant in the group with high ALT. The ultrasound results correlate with elevation of the ALT.
Conclusions. There was not relation between the number of criteria found in the children for metabolic syndrome and presentation of NAFLD. There were not differences among the groups with and without increase of ALT; the USG should be used in the early diagnoses of NAFLD.
