ABSTRACT

The propose of the study was to determine the prevalence and the severity of dental fluorosis in the permanent dentition of schoolchildren of Coyoacan D.F. Mexico.
A total of 216 schoolchildren of 10 and 11 years old male and female were evaluated in where the concentration of fluoride in the drinking water is ‹ 0.3 ppm.
The level of fluorosis was determined using the Dean’s modificated Index (ID), Thylstrup-Fejerskov Index (TFI) and community Index (CFI). The results were realized by two investigator using the WHO criteria with Kappa 0.92 intracalibration and 0.90 intercalibration.
The schoolchildren had a fluorosis prevalence of 34.3% distributed in very mild 42 (19.4%) mild 24 (11.1%) and moderate 8 (3.7%). No child was found with a severe fluorosis. Using the CFI we found 0.53.
The dental fluorosis found was high in relation to the F concentration in water. The altitude and the diet pattern common in the area may be factors that have contributed to the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis.
