ABSTRACT

Background: Robotic assistance introduction into minimally invasive surgery has provided advantages making possible to perform more complex techniques by laparoscopy. Several bariatric surgery teams are nowadays incorporating robotic surgery. Surgical techniques and outcomes are described in this paper. Methods: The surgical steps of the robot Da Vinci assistance during laparoscopic gastric bypass are explained. This is the most frequently robot-assisted bariatric technique due to its complexity. Robotic assistance implies some technical differences with respect to the traditional laparoscopic approach and makes the handsewn gastrojejunostomy easier to perform. Results: Up to now, results support advantages of the robotic-assisted laparoscopic approach in very high BMI patients (superobese patients) and during the learning curve. Moreover, fewer incidences of postoperative gastrojejunal leaks are also reported. Conclusions: Although experience is still limited, robotic assistance has provided some advantages to the laparoscopic gastric bypass technique and its outcome.
