ABSTRACTTraditionally, the father was kept removed from the different stages of the pregnancy centering only in being the provider, especially in the patriarchal societies where diverse cultural factors were influential to determine his attitude concerning the pregnancy and the paternity. Nevertheless, for some years in the industrialized societies this attitude has changed gradually and the father has been involved during the pregnancy, the childbirth and the early infancy bringing psychological, physical and even social effects proper to his own point of view on the paternity.
