Costs of hospital attention for patients with hypertensive diseases in the «Ignacio Chávez» National Institute of Cardiology

ABSTRACT

Objective: To outline the attention cost per hospitalization case of Hypertensive Diseases at the Ignacio Chávez National Institute of Cardiology. Methods: The cost of Hypertensive Diseases was obtained through a transversal-retrospective and descriptive study. Based on patients diagnosed with Hypertensive Diseases, according to the World Health Organization International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), through on 2007 morbidity report, a representative sample was determined to cost by frequency tabulation and unit costs of medical services. There were identified the socio-demographic characteristics of the attended population. Results: The average cost of attention per hospitalization case in 2007, was of $44,005 Mexican pesos, in spite of the standard cost that was $25,508. The average hospitalization days were 5. The hospitalization cost was the most impacting item in attention cost. The total attention cost for Hypertensive Diseases in 2007, was of $4,693,472 Mexican pesos. Socio-demographic characterization of population: Gender: the 58% of cases were female; Origin: 78% came from México City and Estado de Mexico; Age group: the 48.3% was in a 61-80 years range and Income: 66% were on the lowest socioeconomic levels. Conclusion: As an instrument for making de cisions, medical-economical information is essential. The cost of treatment analysis will fall in to the establishment of health policies that favor a better attention to infirmary users with lower attention costs for both hospitals and patients.
