Malnutrition effect in the school performance of children|

ABSTRACT

Objective. To analyze the relationship of malnutrition and school performance, in children.
Material and methods. The nutritional condition of 972 scholars was assessed by anthropometry. Information was obtained from the parents about the birth-weight and length-birth. The school performance of children was assessed investigating if they were failed any school year and the Spanish and mathematic grade averages in the last three evaluations.
Results. It was observed that stunting children failed more than the normal children and the children that had fat depletion had lower average in mathematics than the children without fat depletion. In the logistic regression models the children with more birth-weight had lower probability of had failed any year school in relation to the children low birth-weight. The boys with overweight and normal weight had lower risk to had failed respect to the low weight children. The triceps skinfold was positively associated with mathematics and Spanish qualifications.
Conclusions. They both, the current malnutrition as the chronic malnutrition, seems to have deleterious effects in school children’s learning capacity.
