Frequency of primary and secondary fibromyalgia and associated diseases in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Hospital Regional 1° de Octubre, ISSSTE

ABSTRACT
Fibromyalgia is an chronic which causes generalized muscular pain which may be incapacitating , its etiology and physiopathology are still unknown. The goal of this study is report the socio demographic characteristics and the medical services which refer patients with diagnosis apart from fibromyalgia.
Methods: The study is a transversal analytic, proelective study in patients which were referred to the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation service in the 1° de Octubre Regional Hospital from ISSSTE in the time period from June to August 2008. In all cases a questionnaire was used to determine the most frequent ailments and symptoms as well as a clinical examination focused primarily on the identification of at least 11 of the 18 tender points related to fibromyalgia, as described by the American College of Rheumatology.
Results: In was determined that in the 100 patients selected for the study 92% were female, the age onset mean was 52 years of age. The services and peripheral clinics which referred these patients to the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation service were Clinic Indianilla with 31% and the service of Orthopedics with 27%. The most common misdiagnosis were lumbar pain with 27%, cervical and lumbar pain with 15%, the 97% referred generalized pain and sleep disorders, 80% gastritis, 87% fatigability and gastritis, 87% colitis.
Conclusion: Services with the highest fibromyalgia referral rate were Clinica Indianilla with 31% and the Orthopedics Service from 1° de Octubre Regional Hospital with 27%.
