ABSTRACT

Proposal: Is there an association between arterial hypertension and electrocardiogram abnormalities among the elderly? Methods: Two hundred and forty-one individuals over 65 years of age from coastal regions of the Mexican States of Colima and Veracruz were studied. They presented both with or without arterial hypertension according to present-day diagnostic criterion. Correlation between age and blood pressure, blood pressure difference in the presence of electrocardiogram abnormality (except arrhythmia), or association between electrocardiogram abnormality and abnormal blood pressure were looked. Results: There was hardly any correlation found between age and blood pressure. There was no difference in blood pressure figures when electrocardiogram was normal or abnormal, nor was there an association between abnormal electrocardiography and blood pressure at any level. Conclusion: From our observations of the elderly subjects, electrocardiogram abnormality in independent from blood pressure status and figures are not age dependent.
