ABSTRACT

Hospitals that serve patients with complex pediatric pathology requiring attention specialist and should have alternatives to help in the diagnosis and treatment. Therapeutic apheresis is one of these alternatives available in many hospitals. However the use of cell separators in these patients, should consider some aspects, the first the decision that the procedure is the only alternative available in the treatment of disease and the benefit is greater than the risk, then solve technical issues directly related to weight of (the) patient (s), as are the vascular access and extracorporeal volume. Procedures will be performed by trained and experienced in handling the machines, monitoring and care patients. A review of procedures performed at the INP in the period 2003 to June 2009, reporting a total of 114 procedures in 24 patients, being the most frequent pathologies, Sx Guillain Barre, TTP and SLE. The minimum age was 2 years with a weight of 9.2 kg, only one patient (4.1%) did not require the placement of central venous catheter.
